Who decides what is taught? State legislatures are responsible for creating, operating, managing, and maintaining state school systems. The legislatures are the state policy makers for education (Johnson 236). They shouldn’t be allowed to decide what should be taught in schools. They don’t know what kind of future children would want. I think that the students and parents should decide what should be taught in schools. It is the student’s future. Student’s should have a say in what they want to learn. They will have more motivation to come to school and learn. How will the curriculum be taught? According to the textbook, the four schools of philosophy include idealism, realism, pragmatism, and existentialism (83). Idealism is the philosophy that believes that the nature of reality is perfect. An idealistic believes that people should focus their thoughts on ideas. Plato did not think that people create knowledge, rather they discover it (Johnson 84). An idealistic teacher tells the student how to think. They believe that they are the ideal model for their students. Realism is accepting the facts of life and being prepared to deal with it. A realistic teacher focuses on teaching students’ logic, the scientific method, and critical thinking. Students will be able to understand reality. Pragmatism is making decisions based on facts, not on moral beliefs. A pragmatist believes that we learn best through experiences (Johnson 88). The goal for a pragmatist is to apply practical knowledge for life in a developing society. Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes the individual existence, freedom, and choice. In an existentialism classroom, teachers encourage student centered learning. Students are able to explore their own values. As a future teacher, my philosophy goal is to provide an existentialism classroom. My goal is to inspire students to share their creative ideas. I want to provide students with the opportunity to be the best they can be. In order for students to succeed in life, there must be an effective teacher helping them along the way. Effective teachers are the key to a student’s achievement. First of all, an effective teacher must love to teach. If they don’t like children, then they won’t enjoy their job. An effective teacher must develop a positive relationship with their students. An ideal teacher and student relationship should be based on trust and respect. Students will commit themselves to learn more if they trust their teachers. Teachers should recognize when their students are having trouble with the material. Students will feel more comfortable asking for help. Likewise, students and teachers should demonstrate respect for each other. This will promote a healthy environment within the classroom. Additionally, a teacher should be able to learn from the feedback of their students. An effective teacher must show motivation. A motivated teacher can improve student learning. Students who are not motivated will not learn effectively. Finally, an effective teacher should have good communication skills with their students and the parents. In the future, I want to be a preschool/kindergarten teacher. This was always my childhood dream. When I was a little girl, I dreamed of having my own classroom. I’d lined up all my stuffed animals on the floor and use a pencil to point at things just like a teacher. I was very serious in my little classroom. When I was 10 years old, I helped my aunt at her preschool class. It was such a delight being with those kids and I felt that desire to teach. When I got assigned to take of the children in my church, I was really happy. I prepare bible lessons and activities to the children. I always try to bring joy so they’ll feel motivated to learn more. The most important skill that I have to improve is public speaking. Having good public speaking skills is the way to being an effective teacher. To conclude, education is an important aspect for the future. Education prepares students with all that is needed to make their dreams come true. Education opens door with many opportunities. Without education, there is no future. Having an education is the best thing people can do for themselves.
