Mental stigma is developed along; this in

Mental health, the topic that conjures
up an immense amount of thoughts and images in the minds of the public and as
well as the media. Along with the thoughts and images formed within this topic comes
stigmas and labeling. Labeling refers to individuals who are being categorized based
on their actions or behaviors and then comparing it to what is considered to be
acceptable in modern society. Once the labeling occurs, a stigma is developed along;
this in turn can have a great effect on the individual once the label and
stigma have taken form. When one thinks about labeling in mental health it is
mostly the negative aspect however, it can also have positive connotations.

            Mental health includes our psychological,
emotional, and social well-being. Mental health affects the way one acts,
behaves, and thinks. There are social norms that are in place, which creates a
barrier between what is considered accepted and the rest which would be
considered abnormal. Anything that deviates from the social norm is labeled and
attached comes a stigma. In today’s society, labeling has become widespread and
mostly in the negative aspect.  For
example, when a person has a mental health disorder and the general public labels
the condition then it will result in the individual to believe they are the “black
sheep” in society and might think they fail to function adequately as compared
to the rest of society. When the individual is labeled, they can take it
negatively and instead of reaching out for help due to their mental disorder they
could hide from it because of how mental disorders are being labeled and the
negative stigma that comes attached. It can be said that when an individual
feels incompetent it can lead to negative effects, this is what happens when
labeling occurs. This leads the individual to feel devalued and perhaps
discriminated against and could possibly decide to have social withdrawal or
perform secrecy of their mental disorder which then results in the individuals mental
state to become affected since the disorder stays persistent.

            Although labeling in mental health
seems to be predominantly negative it can also be positive to the individual
with the mental disorder. Not all labels are to be negative against mental
disorders. For example, mental health disorders are often labeled to help
categorize the individuals disorder to then help that individual and be able to
recognize that particular disorder. Another way labeling is positive is by helping
the individual come to terms with their mental disorder and then the individual
will be willing to get professional help and learn to work with the mental
disorder which is something significant as the goal is to help the person cope
with the mental disorder.

In conclusion, mental health can be
a very delicate subject that should be widespread educated about. Not only is
it important to learn about what mental health is but also what comes along
with mental health such as when the individuals get labeled and the attached
stigma that comes with. Furthermore, it is of great significance to learn about
both the negative and positive aspects of labeling in mental health and how
that can affect the individual with the mental disorder. In my opinion knowing
both sides will play an important role for both the individual with the mental
disorder along with the general public to then further educate them more in
depth when it comes to labeling others.
