I’ve was a “sexless” place. People somewhat

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I mean, sure Europe, America, and Middle East can blame Abraham religions, even southeast Asian countries like Philippine and Malaysia can blame Abraham religion (and colonialism) for their homophobia. But what China has to blame? For majority part of our (over 3000 years of) recorded history, there was never been any kind of statewide persecution of homosexual people. Sure our traditional family value demanded couples producing offsprings, but beyond that, men had always been free to date other men; keep younger men (or occasionally boys) as “mistress”(Mister?) on the side; brothels often offered services from men and women (for male costumers); we have poems depicting homosexual love; we have emperors keeping male concubine and went on record about it…And all of sudden, Boom! Communists came and homosexuality become a perversion. I blame colonialism for a lot of shit happened in China, but honestly, this one is not on colonialism and whipepo. What happened?I think there’s a few things happened when communist took over:sexual oppression. Not just homosexual, all kinds of sexual activities were oppressed. 50s China was a “sexless” place. People somewhat accept sex between married couples as a metaphorical concept that produce babies, sometimes it’s even depicted as kind of “duty” for your country (yes, I’m very aware of the parallel of Handmaiden’s Tale). Pumping out babies are considered a great contribution to the society, but the action/process of baby-making is hidden. It’s considered dirty.Conformity. So China had always been a conforming culture. Generally speaking, (probably over-generalized), our culture does not encourage individualism or rebellion. We value conformity. We don’t like “different”. And the authoritarian regime of Mao after 1949 only made it worse. It’s not just the homosexuals, anything that’s nonconformity was persecuted, no such thing as “alternative lifestyle”, only the most vanilla missionary sex is… tolerated.I’ve often thought Chinese communism exhibit many characteristics of a religion, or a cult:charismatic leaderstrict creedin-group thinkingstrong sense of unified identity (the whole is much more important than individual).People derive pride and sense of belong when being part of the whole, therefore will not tolerate anything that disrupt that.Strong pressure to conform with the group. So I guess if you want to blame anyone, or anything… blame religion, or any alternative of that.
